Snapfish is an online retailer offering a variety of photo gifts and print services. They are mostly known for their robust photo books, which are created by uploading dozens of your own photos and arranging them on pages with designs and text to be bound into a book. Prices start as low as $19.99 for a Linen cover 8x10 photo book with 20 full color pages.

When you visit Snapfish to create a photo book you must first select the size that you want to go with. There are several hardcover options - 8x8, 8x11, and 12x12. Two different options for 8x11 are available - Leather or Linen cover, with a "window" cut to display a portion of the image on your first page, or a custom printed cover or jacket. If you decided you want to switch between these two options you can do so in the designing area.

Before you can get started working on your photo book you have to first register with Snapfish. When you get to the desiging area it is best to start by uploading all of the images you want to use in your album. Once you have all your images uploaded, you are given the option of autofilling the photo book. The design system will then layout all of your images in a variety of ways, in order of how they were uploaded. Sometimes it will put one on a page with text, sometimes three on a page with no text, etc. This is a good option for the less-creative or people who don't want to spend a ton of time on the process.

The design system is very robust. If you try to expand an image too much and it becomes low resolution you will be warned. Photo adjustments can be done from this area, including red eye removal, cropping and resizing, vertical and horizontal flipping, 360 degree rotation, color enhancement, and brightness adjustment. If you so choose you can also convert the image to black and white or sepia tone, or colorize the image.

Page backgrounds are based on the theme you choose prior to the design area, but can be altered on an individual basis by selecting the "backgrounds" tab. The "Layouts" tab allows you to choose how many images you want on a page, if and where you want text, and how large images are. There are 78 different layouts to choose from, many of which have included text areas. You can also have borders on your images by going to the "Borders" tab but these are not compatible with all of the Layouts.

To keep track of which of your images you have or have not used, the pane on the far right side of the design area shows a checkbox on all images that are currently used in the photo book. You can also remove images from this area.

When your photo book is completed you can preview it by clicking "Preview" at the bottom of the design area, which gives a very convincing navigatible rendering of what your photo book will look like.

The base price of your photo book includes 20 pages. Additional pages (2 at a time) cost an extra $1.99. You can have a maximum of 120 pages.

It only takes 2-5 days from the time you order for your book to be processed, printed, and bound. Standard shipping is $7.99 and also takes 2-5 days.

I'm sure that you are familiar with what photo books are and you probably already know that there are several great sites out there where you can order custom photo books to keep and show off your favorite pictures. As I was looking through some of the more popular sites out there, I found that SnapFish is by far one of the best priced photo book sites – and the selection that they offer is just amazing. Their photo books start as low as $4.99, which is cheaper than almost every other site out there, and they offer something that I haven't seen in many other places: a “Picture Me” photo book that allows you to make a complete story book using your pictures.

SnapFish's photo books start at the smaller flip books, where you get a 4X6 or 5X7 spiral bound book that holds several photos you choose. You can move up from there to the every day photo books and the larger photo books that run in the 8X8 and 8X11 range. These larger books will offer you custom covers (leather and linen) with your own pictures on the front, and offer you hundreds of different choices when it comes to layouts, backgrounds, and more. And, then, there is the largest book that they offer, the 12X12 signature book, which is just beautiful.

I ordered a standard 8x10 linen windowed cover photo book with 20 pages and 33 of my favorite images. I've ordered photobooks from a lot of different websites, some enjoyable experiences and some not so much. What I'm most impressed with about this particular book is the quality of the printing. The images are super clear, sharp, and most surprisingly the colors are true. I've received prints and photo books from other companies where many of the colors were dull, or just simply the wrong tone altogether. Every shade in this book is right on the money, and as a professional that is extremely important to me.

I have to say though that I don't really love the linen cover. I think pretty much any of the other options would have been better. The linen mars easily and manages to pick up every piece of dust in my house - which I guess makes my job easier, but I'd rather the photo book look nice. Nothing against Snapfish here, because I'm the one that chose it, but if you're wondering whether to spend a couple extra bucks on a different finish or not, I say do it. In other notes, the binding is really solid and thankfully straight, and the photo book arrived without any dings, scratches, or inconsistencies.

As for the ordering process, Snapfish has the best designing tools of any services that I've used yet. It is extremely easy to design using their preset layouts, or arranging images on your own with "magic" layouts. Editing can be done directly from their designing area so that you can remove redeye, crop, blowup, rotate, or recolor your images. It's quite robust and very user friendly, with easy drag and drop design.

Overall, I am very impressed with the different choices that SnapFish offers when it comes to photo books. It doesn't matter if you're looking for a wedding album, your baby's first year, a gift, or just to show your favorite photos off – SnapFish has a way for you to create an awesome photo book that will not break your budget.

I have one of the larger, "coffee table" style books, that I made with pictures from a trip I took to the Galapagos Islands.

The area around the Islands can be like a whole other planet, so some of these pictures are very exquisite pictures to look at. I was concerned that the pictures may not look as good in a book like this as they do on the screen, however the book accurately represents the color and quality of them. I've shown it to many people, and they've all been blown away by it.

The book I got has the option of taking up the entire front cover with an image, which was a feature I really liked. I'd printed books with another service in the past, and that was not an option then.

It was really easy to design the book on their website. No complaints there!

At the time I ordered, they were in the middle of a huge promotion, and shipping time suffered. I believe it took about 3-4 weeks for it to come. Like I said, they were experiencing a high volume of orders, and I imagine this isn't usually the case.
